That we would quiet, and still our soul; into a state of peacefulness and content! We must be as Children, weaned of the world, and dependent upon THE FATHER, our LORD *GOD*---
Children, when very young, do not desire authority, do not regard outward distinctions, are free from malice, are teachable, and willingly dependent on their parents.Surely we need to be daily renewed in the spirit of our minds, that we may become simple and humble, as little children, and willing to be the least of all. Let us daily study this subject, and examine our own spirits.
PSALM 131...
1+++My heart is not proud, O LORD,
my eyes are not haughty.
I do not aspire to great things
or matters too lofty for me.
2+++Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul;
like a weaned child with his mother,
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
3+++O Israel, put your hope in the LORD,
both now and forevermore.
The psalmist's humility. Believers encouraged to trust in God. - The psalmist aimed at nothing high or great, but to be content in every condition God allotted. Humble saints cannot think so well of themselves as others think of them. The love of God reigning in the heart, will subdue self-love. Where there is a proud heart, there is commonly a proud look. To know God and our duty, is learning sufficiently high for us.
It is our wisdom not to meddle with that which does not belong to us. He was well reconciled to every condition the Lord placed him in. He had been as humble as a little child about the age of weaning, and as far from aiming at high things; as entirely at God's disposal, as the child at the disposal of the mother or nurse. We must become as little children, Mt 18:3. Our hearts are desirous of worldly things, cry for them, and are fond of them; but, by the grace of God, a soul that is made holy, is weaned from these things. The child is cross and fretful while in the weaning; but in a day or two it cares no longer for milk, and it can bear stronger food. Thus does a converted soul quiet itself under the loss of what it loved, and disappointments in what it hoped for, and is easy whatever happens.
When our condition is not to our mind, we must bring our mind to our condition; then we are easy to ourselves and all about us; then our souls are as a weaned child. And thus the psalmist recommends confidence in God, to all the Israel of God, from his own experience. It is good to hope, and quietly to wait for the salvation of the Lord under every trial.
Great lessons to be had from this short, simple message! We DO wrap ourselves up in too much of the world, and DO expend much energy, and time concerning ourselves with matters beneath us, and beyond us! Thus, we are taught TOTAL RELIANCE, TRUST, and DEPENDENCE UPON THE LORD *GOD*, for ONLY HE, in HIS LOVE for us, provides, protects, and leads us aright, and that, abundantly so!!!
The carnal being is ever at odds with the spiritual being, thus, we IMAGINE our own capacities instead of at once, trusting in those of THE LORD! HE KNOWS what is on our mind, and in our heart even before we do, and HE KNOWS where HE IS taking us, therefore, we cause much unrest within as we continue to rely on ourselves! Yah, it IS difficult to become as a Child, but it CAN be done, otherwise HE would not expect it of us! We have battles galore, partly because we resist being reliant on HIM, and wanting to handle things on our own! Still, it IS the effective, and proven WAY OF HIS WILL, and that which keeps us even farther from the clutches, and traps of the enemy!!!
Oh, the things that are SO hard for us to adapt to, but which ARE those that would grant us a merry, content soul!!!
